Options discussed for future of Escambia Jail

Escambia County commissioners are reviewing their options for replacing the jail.

The central booking and detention facility  was destroyed in a gas explosion in April-- killing two people. Now discussions are beginning on how to replace the jail and where to put it.

One of the biggest issues is, they won't know how much it will cost.

"We're looking at land we already have, we are looking at vacant lots owned by others, we're looking at vaccated buildings that would have to come out and be retro-fitted. It's all on the table."

County commissioners are waiting on FEMA and insurance agencies to see how much of the loss they will cover, but that will take a while.

FEMA and the insurance agencies won't make that determination until the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms wraps up their investigation into the explosion.

County commissioners will meet next Thursday to look at their options and begin a course of action
