Stranded pilot whale dies at Perdido Key

A pilot whale has died after beaching itself on Perdido Key.

The whale was discovered this morning. Efforts to keep it alive were unsuccessful.

Steve McCoy with the Gulf Islands National Seashore says several biologists examined the whale. The location of the stranding is near the channel about four miles east of Johnson Beach near Ft. McRee.

McCoy says the stranding is of concern, because when they occur it is frequently in groups. So far no others have been found.
