Turtle Cam Goes Online

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. (AP) -- A live-streaming webcam is focused on a loggerhead sea turtle nest on a Florida Keys beach.

The high-definition camera, which went online Friday evening, offers daytime observation of the nest in natural light and uses infrared lighting at night to avoid disturbing turtles.

Eggs in the nest should hatch during the next few days. The webcam is part of ongoing efforts in the Keys to raise awareness of the need to protect sea turtles.

Loggerhead, green, leatherback, hawksbill and Kemp's ridley sea turtles nest on Keys beaches and other Florida shorelines. All five species are considered either threatened or endangered.

The webcam is funded by the Keys tourism council and was approved by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.
