TRACKING THE TROPICS

On the map below, the circle over the Gulf of Mexico is for an area of low pressure likely heading toward the Texas/Mexico border.  Development is not expected.  Also, we're tracking Cristobal and a tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean Sea that may become another depression though chances are low.

Fort Walton Beach still having drainage problems

Lloyd Street in Fort Walton Beach was one of the hardest-hit places in Okaloosa County during April's flood.

Now a homeowner is asking why more hasn't been done about drainage problems there. The drainage ditches around Wanda Martin's home are clogged with dirt and plants. She says the overflow during storms is eroding her property.

"It's my property. I feel like it's being taken away from me, and being a taxpayer, I don't understand why it can't be fixed, why there's something that cannot be put into place," Wanda Martin said.

Okaloosa County's Director of Public Works agrees the drainage system is inadequate,  and says it was built before current standards were in place. He says the county is in the process of cleaning the ditch line,  but moving water away from the neighborhood will still be a challenge. It drains to a retention pond on private property, and they don't have permission to direct more water there.
