Veteran NYC Firefighter dies battling Brooklyn high rise fire

A veteran New York firefighter was killed in the line of duty while battling a high-rise fire in Brooklyn late Saturday night.

A spokesman for the FDNY says that 40-year-old Lt. Gordon Ambelas died after becoming overcome by smoke on the 19th floor  of the 21-story building.

More than 100 firefighters were at the scene when the firefighter was critically hurt.

Fellow firefighters say he was a 14-year veteran.

Ambelas is a married father of two daughters from Staten Island.

He was honored last month for helping to save a 7-year-old boy who became trapped in a roll-down gate.

Two other firefighters were treated at Bellevue Hospital for minor injuries.

Two residents received treatment at the scene for minor injuries.
