Local vets can now apply for grants to help weatherize their homes

Veterans in Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Counties can now apply for special funds to help weatherize their homes.

The community action program is distributing up to $15,000 per home based on need and income level.

The money is given as a five year forgivable loan, meaning the balance is reduced by 20% each year.

If the homeowner stays in the home for five years, the balance owed is zero.

The goal is to improve energy efficiency, which will in turn reduce monthly energy costs.

Community Action Housing Director Connie Parker explains improvements are included: "lower their energy consumption, save money on their power bill, windows, doors, air ceiling, attic insulation, replacement of mechanical equipment, such as their heating and air".

Veterans who are interested in finding out more can contact the Community Action Program at 679-4817, or through their website.

You can find that information as well on our website at Newslinks.
