New Fire Dept. equipment helps locate missing people with Alzheimers
The Crestview Fire Department is using new equipment that helps them locate missing people who have Autism and Alzheimer's.
A $660 grant awarded to the Crestview Fire Department helped to purchase equipment for Project Lifesaver.
The equipment will help locate people with Alzheimer's or other similar conditions who may have wandered off.
Time is of the essence when you have a family member with Autism or Alzheimer's who goes missing. Every second counts when you want to find them and that's why the Crestview Fire Department has a device with a transmitter you can get for your family member to find them when they are missing.
The department has had the device for nearly eight years. They made their first purchase after an incident ten years ago. Involving a man with Alzheimer's.
"We spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars of man hours looking for the patient and fuel cost the whole nine yards. When we did find him he actually had passed away," said Anthony Holland, Battalion Chief.
The $660 Emergency Project Grant helped the department update the device. Cutting down on precious time.
"In less then an hour we can have the patient located and brought back home safely and we can cut down on cost and especially for any patient that's out in the element. It eliminates them being out in the eliminate for any length of time," said Holland.
So, how does it work? Once a patient is signed up for the program. They receive a bracelet with a transmitter and number. If they disappear, the caregiver will alert a local Project Lifesaver Agency. Who will notify the fire department. They enter the number assigned to the person into the device and tell the department where they were last seen.
"As I'm pointing which ever way the single strength is stronger that's the direction we need to go," said Holland.
