Beach cleanup

When you walk on the beach, you might not think about the cost of keeping it clean.
But it can be expensive.

Early in the morning, sand sifters hit the beach to clean trash from six miles of Destin Beach and another three miles in Okaloosa Island.

In the past, the beach was cleaned by private contractors
But now County employees are in charge.

County leaders say since taking over, they've saved money.
John, "We're looking at, in comparison to the contract, probably 200,000 per year in annual savings, and that's significant"

And now that the County is in charge of beach clean up, the trash cans are emptied seven days a week instead of six.
