Escambia County man arrested in U Street death investigation
ESCAMBIA COUNTY -- Escambia County deputies have arrested a man after a woman was found dead inside his home.
Matthew Warren, 32, is now charged with first degree murder.
Deputies say Warren was in the middle of the road near Hayes and "U" Streets when they stopped him. He told them there was a dead person in his home.
"A crime of this nature, it's a little different, a little scary actually" said George Norris, neighbor.
George Norris was sitting on his porch when he noticed a man acting very strange walking down "U" Street.
That man believed to be Matthew Warren, then stopped right in front of his house.
"He was staring up into the sky like something was wrong and when he got on his knees right in the middle of the road in front of my house, I could hear him and he kept saying Lord please forgive me for what I've done" said Norris.
George's cousin, Amelia Godwin called the Sheriff's department to report Warren acting suspicious.
Amelia says in the days leading up to the homicide, she noticed Warren's behavior becoming more bizarre.
"He had a look on his face like he was waiting on somebody to say something to him so he could jump on them. I couldn't look at him in his eyes, that's how intense he was" said Amelia Godwin, neighbor.
Escambia County deputies came to the area responding to Amelia's call.
They found Warren in the street, and after checking out his home, the found a woman dead inside.
Warren was then arrested.
Investigators are trying to figure out how and why the woman was killed.
George and Amelia hope other people remain vigilant and report anything suspicious.
"Any kind of strange behavior from someone like that definitely call the Sheriff's Department and at least have them check in on it" said Norris.
The woman's name won't be released until the Medical Examiner finishes its report, and the family has been contacted.
