Millions of dollars in BP Early Restoration money may be coming to Florida

A group of Florida attorneys want all members of the Florida bar to pay a larger fee to help those who can't afford legal services.

They petitioned the Florida Supreme Court to increase Florida Bar Membership fees by 100-dollars each year.
The increase would raise bar fees from 265 to 365 dollars.
Currently, the Florida Bar Foundation funds legal aid for those in need through its "IOTA" program which stands for "Interest On Trust Accounts."
But those accounts are down about thirty-eight million dollars since 2007.
Those opposed to the increase say this is not the best way to address the problem.

"I'm not sure if $100 is the right amount.  I know that some of the smaller law firms struggle with the amount of the fees to begin with and so I think if we did maybe a $50 increase for the next 2 or 3 years or until interests rates start to return, I think it would be a really good idea."

There are approximately ninety-nine thousand members of the Florida Bar.
