U.S. Navy rescues 300 in Mediterranean

Two U.S. Naval ships rescued nearly 300 people from the Mediterranean Saturday.

The USS Bataan and the USS Elrod sent sailors to pull the group to safety after one of their six small boats began to sink. The crew on board the Bataan also provided medical care, and food.
Five of the passengers were airlifted to a hospital on nearby Malta.

The remaining 277 people were transferred to an offshore patrol vessel belonging to Malta's military.
