Santa Rosa man faces charges after beating 6 month old daughter
A 6 month old child is in the intensive care unit with severe head injuries.
Santa Rosa County deputies say 27 year old Joseph Walker beat the child with his fists.
Walker is now charged with felony cruelty toward a child and aggravated child abuse.
Doctors at the Santa Rosa Medical Center alerted deputies last week after a baby was admitted to their care with severe head trauma.
The 6 month old was airlifted from this hospital to Sacred Heart, where Doctors found the child had a fractured skull and extensive bruising all over the head and body.
Investigators say Joseph Walker was the child's attacker.
Walker's in-laws tell us that Walker is a father of five and that the 6 month old he attacked was his daughter and the youngest of his children.
Tammy Galbrath is friends with the baby's family and says she saw a picture of the infant on Facebook.
"It was just her lying on the hospital crib, wrapped up in a blanket, with black eyes."
Family members believe the baby was beaten at home but deputies say the attack happened somewhere at the baseball park, at the Gospel Projects Youth Athletic Club Tuesday evening around 8:30.
The clubs president issued this statement that says, in part...
"Gospel Projects Park had absolutely no knowledge of the alleged crime...Gospel Projects Parks will fully cooperate with the legal authorities in this investigation. Our hearts and prayers go out to this young infant."
Walker was found guilty of battery in a domestic violence case in 2012.
Though Galbrath says she's still surprised because he often acted like a proud father.
"He seemed to be a doting dad. He posted pictures on Facebook of his kids, and say 'his boys' and things like that"
"I knew that he had a temper and I knew things were going on, but I didn't know he would take it this far"
Family members say the other children are safe with family members.
Walker is in Santa Rosa County jail and he's being held without bond.
