Weather Alert

On the map below, the circle over the Gulf of Mexico is for an area of low pressure heading toward Texas.  Development is not expected.  Also, we're tracking Cristobal and a tropical wave over the Atlantic Ocean that may become another depression though chances are low.

More bike racks may be coming to Pensacola Beach

New bike racks could be installed on Pensacola Beach this summer. The Santa Rosa Island Authority is looking to buy ten of them.  The bike racks would be placed in popular areas along the beach and that is something people we talked to say is needed.

Gina Hayes says "There are a lot of people out here [Pensacola Beach] that ride bikes and there are very few places to actually park bikes."
Hayes lives in downtown Pensacola where several new bike racks were installed.  She said "I have noticed they have put a lot more bike racks downtown and I think here [Pensacola Beach] would be awesome because there are a lot more people out here biking and we are out here [Pensacola Beach] biking every weekend and we prefer to get on a bike and go from here to there."

The Santa Rosa Island Authority will look at the bike issue Wednesday.  One board member says the racks would be a waste of money and subject to vandalism, but that opinion is not shared by everyone.  Executive Director of the Island Authority, Buck Lee, has a different view.  "We are talking about getting maybe ten. Put a couple on each side of the pavilion, a couple down by the dock. That is where a lot of people lean their bikes up against. We will see how it goes. I mean if we get ten we are looking at $800.

If the board decides to buy the new bike racks on Wednesday, they will be installed within the next 30 days.  That means they may be installed right before the Blue Angels fly in July.
