Emerald Coast Convention Center expansion almost complete

OKALOOSA COUNTY  --  An outdoor expansion at the Emerald Coast Convention Center is almost finished, and more changes could be coming.

The 30,000 square foot expansion should be finished by the end of the month.
Because so many people coming out of the convention center want to cross Highway 98, a covered walkover may be built.

If it's approved through county procedures, it could be possible as early as fiscal 2015.

It's part of a long term vision that includes new covered entranceways and a multi-level parking area.

With more and bigger events ahead, Joe Guidry of the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort says the time has come for a walkover.

Joe Guidry/Ramada Plaza Beach Resort  "If we have that bridge coming across 98, suddenly al the hotels that are out here are attached to the convention center. It's good business for us, it's good business for the convention center"

Projects at the convention center are paid for by bed taxes on hotel and condo rentals.

That money can only be spent in ways that boost tourism.
