Councilman wants to re-structure city government

A Pensacola City Councilman wants to re-structure the city government.

Charles Bare submitted three charter amendments last Tuesday.
He says they will restore the balance of power to Pensacola's government.

The first amendment would establish the City Council as a legislative branch and the Mayor as an executive power.
The second would give the City Council power to set limits on contracting authority and monitor budget transfers throughout the year.
The third amendment proposes the Mayor be the presiding officer of the City Council with full voting power.

"His item is important because currently we don't have good communication or corporation between the mayor's office and city council. this actually gives the mayor more power, the mayor controls the agenda, the mayor calls the meetings, he doesn't have to send a memo to us he can just do it. "

Bare says the changes would also mean the Mayor would be subject to recall, and Sunshine laws.
