Escambia County officer involved shooting

ESCAMBIA COUNTY  --  An Escambia County man is dead after cutting his own throat and charging at a deputy.

Causing the deputy to shoot the man.
The incident happened around 3:00 this morning on Bent Oak Drive.

Escambia County deputies were called out twice overnight to check on Thomas Fillingim mental state saying he was a danger to himself and others.

When they arrived to this home a deputy found Fillingim inside.
Fillingim's family told the deputy he had cut his own throat.

Around 10:00 Thursday night Thomas Fillingim's family called 9-1-1 after he began threatening to harm himself.

Around 3:00 his daughter says her uncle alerted her about her fathers situation.

Filliingim came inside her home with his throat cut open.
"He had returned to the home and was beating on the door trying to enter the home so we assume the family was in fear for their personal safety."
She immediately  called 9-11.
A deputy arrived within minutes.

"The officer entered the home and he had a weapon in his hand a bladed instrument and he lunged at the officer and the officer fired in self defense."
Fillingim's daughter tells a different story.
She says her husband was getting her father to hand over his knife when the deputy arrived.
And neither her or her family felt threatened.

"He was handing the knife to him when the cop came in he seen them. My dad was handing the knife to him. He told my husband to step aside and he thought he was going to taser him, but no he shot and fire and killed him over him passing the knife to my husband."
But the Sheriff's Office says Fillingim has a long wrap sheet and has been baker acted before.
Everything from domestic violence, criminal mischief, to resisting arrest.

"Very dangerous. The use of bladed instruments in the past in acts of violence against other citizens."
His family disagrees.
"My dad was not a threat to anybody else."
"The only person he was harmful to was himself."
His daughter says she wishes she had never called 911.
"If I would've known that a cop was going to come here and shoot my dad I would've loaded him up in my car and took him myself, so that just tells you that you can't even call somebody and be like help me without a damn cop coming in your house and shooting."
The family says they plan to get a lawyer to get the justice they deserve.
The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave.

FDLE has taken over the case to determine if this situation was a justified shooting.
