HEALTH: Washington lawmakers consider changing way generic drugs labels
WASHINGTON DC -- Lawmakers are Capitol Hill are considering changing the way generic drugs are labeled.
The US Food and Drug Administration proposal would allow generic drug manufacturers to independently update product labeling, and then have it approved by the FDA.
Right now generic drug companies aren't allowed to make any changes without first checking with the FDA.
A House subcommittee heard testimony yesterday on the proposal, but did not make a decision.
Several consumer groups have spoken out against the proposed change.
They say requiring generic manufacturers to make changes prior to FDA approval would cause confusion.
