Santa Rosa all-county choir concert features Barry Manilow song
Music writes the songs that make the whole world sing.
One hundred and fifty Santa Rosa County 5th graders - celebrating the man who gave them - the world of music.
This Barry Manilow song wasn't originally in the program for the Santa Rosa All-County Choir Concert.
Until music and choral director at Bagdad Elementary, Heidi Grazes met the man himself.
"This whole city came out for you."
Thousands went to see Manilow at his January concert at Pensacola Bay Center.
But he wanted to see -- one of our local music educators.
He called Channel Three News and asked us to find one extraordinary local music teacher he could recognize and celebrate.
So we -- called on you.
Our Channel Three viewers submitted hundreds of nominations and voted for Miss Graves to receive front row concert tickets, a meet and greet with Manilow -- and -- an incredible surprise.
"And I also decided to give you a check for 10,000 dollars so you can buy as many instruments and fix up as many instruments for your school as possible."
"Oh my gosh!"
That 10,000 dollars shocked Miss Graves, her fellow teachers and her students.
It also bought a piano
And dozens of instruments for the Music Education Program at Santa Rosa County School District Schools.
"It means that the kids are gonna have a fuller education. Music is very, very important for our kids."
"Kids want music and they need it."
Which is exactly the goal and focus of the Manilow Music Project.
And in Santa Rosa County, it is a goal achieved.
"Thank you for keeping music education alive in Santa Rosa County."
"Thank you, Mr. Manilow."
