Dog returns home after 9 year absence

The Hight family searched frantically for their dog Maggie after she broke out of their back yard nine years ago.

As time passed, the family made peace with the idea she'd never re-turn. They never forgot her though.

This week, April Hight received a phone call she never expected. Maggie had been found by the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society.

Maggie was picked up by animal control officers in Holt, Tuesday, along with another stray dog.

When they checked Maggie for a microchip, they found Hight's phone number and left a message.

She was shocked to hear that it was a little dog named Maggie who was quiet and gentle with shelter staff.

Hight and daughter, Abigayle, picked up the almost 11-year-old dog Wednesday. Hight's daughter, who was 4 when Maggie disappeared, cried when she saw the pup.

"I just knew it was her because Maggie was al-ways very sweet, very mild tempered, very loving," Hight said.

Maggie's hair was mat-ted with feces and dirt. A checkup showed no major health issues, but she's "skin and bones," Hight said.

"It's just a gift to have her back," Hight said. "She'll be able to live out the rest of her years loved and cared for and hopefully that'll make up for the hopefully not all horrible years she had to live through to get back home."
