Former Florida governor Reubin Askew has died at age 85

PENSACOLA  --  Reubin Askew, one of Florida's most influential and effective governors has died at the age of 85.

The 85-year -old was admitted to the hospital Saturday with  pneumonia, and his condition worsened when he suffered a stroke

The former governor is credited with dozens of legislative successes, including reforming the tax system and opening up the government to greater public scrutiny by creating the Florida Sunshine Law.
   
And when state lawmakers wouldn't require officials to disclose their finances, Askew went around them and went to the public, successfully passing the first Citizens Initiative in 1976.
   
He also became the first governor to win successive terms in 1970 and 1974.
