UPDATE: New York City explosion kills two

NEW YORK CITY  --  Two people were killed and at least 55 were injured today when an explosion tore through a building in Manhattan's East Harlem neighborhood.

The blast collapsed two buildings near Park Avenue and 116th Street around 9 am
Plumes of thick smoke engulfed the area like fog around the buildings.

Authorities say all signs point to a dangerous leak of natural gas.
Some residents say they smelled gas and had called the power company about 15 minutes before the blast.

Crews were dispatched, but arrived too late.
The suction from my window was like 'shhhhuuush' and went back out.

My ceiling collapsed. I thought it was an earthquake
"When I ran out my building I ran out the block there was only a couple of people out. I saw them dragging an older lady out the rubble."

Several people are still unaccounted for.
Firefighters will search through the rubble of the buildings once the fire has been completely put out.
