Marriage may lead to longer lives

Loving someone makes your heart feel good.

Now medicine is underlining that..and its not just a sentiment in a greeting card.

ABC's Senior Medical Contributor, Doctor Timothy Johnson has more.

The heart wants what the heart wants now a new study suggests that wanting to tie the knot may literally help our hearts and lead to longer lives.

New York University researchers looked at data on more than 3.5 million of us looking at who had one or more blood vessel problems that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Married couples, it turns out, tended to have fewer of these problems than single people especially apparent in younger people. But when the marriage ended so did the benefits. Divorced and widowed people's risk went back up.

The researchers were quick to note that the benefits probably aren't big enough to justify rushing to the altar with just anyone. But for married couples, give each other a little smile across the dinner table and put your hearts at ease.
