Wild coyotes attack dog in Eglin AFB residence

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE  --  OKALOOSA COUNTY - An Eglin Air Force Base woman is warning her neighbors, after she says a pack of coyotes came into her yard.  One of them grabbed her Chihuahua and ran for the woods.

Laura Hussey "This is little four-pound Miki. He's shaking a little, if you've ever owned a Chihuahua you know that can be for effect. But he has been through a very scary experience."

Monday night around 9:15, Jackie Ogden took Miki and her other dog outside to the yard. She saw eyes glowing in the dark.

Jackie Ogden "I wasn't sure what it was, it was really big, it looked like somebody else's dog had gotten out. I've seen coyotes before, and this one was very large, it did not look like it"

Not yet knowing the animal was a predator, she looked away for a second to put her larger dog inside. That was all the time it took for the coyote to grab Miki and start running for the woods.

Jackie "I just keep hearing it in my mind. I can hear him being picked up. I can hear him yelping and crying the whole way there"

Jackie ran after them, screaming. The animal finally dropped Miki, just short of the treeline. He has puncture wounds on both sides of his body, and a severed tendon that dislocated his leg.

Jackie "It's made me afraid. I don't know if something's going to be they already had the taste of his blood in their mouth, are they going to come back?"

Ogden's husband heard her screams and ran outside.

Jackie "He actually saw an additional two coyotes running alongside me, looking at me kind of like I don't know if they were about to attack me"

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has reached out to the company that manages base housing, asking if they can help with education. Ogden says it's needed.

Jackie "If they come home at night, this coyote's waiting and he doesn't care. He doesn't care that a human is standing right there. It could be someone's child next time"

Laura Hussey "Miki will need surgery to repair his dislocated leg, but otherwise, vet says he's going to make a full recovery."

Jackie Ogden has set up a youcaring site for Miki's medical bills:
