Sochi Winter Olympics opening ceremonies

SOCHI, RUSSIA  --  The Sochi Winter Olympics are due to open today with a lavish ceremony at the Fisht Stadium by the Black Sea.
Things kicked off yesterday with qualifying rounds.
With massive security forces in place, the Sochi Olympics officially open today with a ceremony that organizers say will show their love for Russia.

Before the  event, former olympian Brian Boitano spoke with reporters about representing the US as a gay American

"I signed on to the presidential delegation knowing that we would be sending a message. I thought that it is such a powerful message that the president was deciding to send that I chose to come out as a gay man for the delegation."

Meanwhile American athletes like Team USA Ski Jumper Peter Frenette looked very relaxed sending out this selfie of him getting ready for the ceremonies
Day one of the Sochi Games began with US mogul skier Heidi Kloser pulling out of the games after seriously injuring her right leg during a training run.

In the new team skating competition Americans Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir sit in 5th place after the pairs short program. Meanwhile US men's skater Jeremy Abbott is in a disappointing seventh.

It was better news in snowboarding. American Jamie Anderson qualified for the women's snowboard slope-style final with Charles Guldemon finishing as the top US men's qualifier.

But in cross country skiing all eyes are on a potential four legged problem. Stray dogs. They've been wandering and barking at skiers. Organizers say they are on the lookout to prevent any dogs from affecting athletes during the cross country races.
