ESCAMBIA COUNTY  --  Dozens of law enforcement officers and civilians were recognized today at the Escambia County sheriff's annual awards ceremony.

One deputy even received the Purple Heart for his military service more than a decade ago.

Deputy Sam Shelly was injured as a Petty Officer in the U S Navy in 1997, serving aboard the USS Benfold in the Straits of Hormuz.  Shelly was hit by a bullet in the head, but still managed to help get some of his shipmates to safety.

"The initial emotion was overwhelming.  It's been 16 years since the events and I thought I fell through the cracks and would never receive anything for it at all."

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan presented Deputy Shelly with the Purple Heart.
