Efforts to keep kids in school 'Dream Defenders'

ESCAMBIA COUNTY   --  An effort to keep more students in school and out of the corrections system was the focus of a talk today in Pensacola.

Ciara Taylor is the political director of the "Dream Defenders," an action group formed after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Taylor discussed a Florida House bill that would end what's called the "School-to- Prison Pipeline."

The bill calls for schools to make every effort to discipline students "in house" before sending them to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Ciara Taylor: "Even though a few passionate people can make great change it's better to have your entire community working together towards something positive."

The Democratic Women's Club of Escambia County presented the talk at the West Florida Public Library downtown, in observance of Black History Month.
