Chavez Execution 13th of governor's first term

Wednesday night's execution of Juan Carlos Chavez put Florida Governor Rick Scott in first place of an odd category.

Chavez was the 13th execution in Scott's first term.
That's a record among first-term Florida governors since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.

Since then, 83 have been executed.
Chavez abducted Jimmy Ryce in 1995, in rural Miami-Dade County.

Ryce's father says, he hopes the killer's execution sends a strong signal to other would-be child molesters and abductors.

But not everyone agrees.
"There seems to be a real need to hurry things along and, in our view, there's kind of this false sense that it will somehow bring resolution and finality to the families and of course we don't believe that."

Scott signed into law the "Timely Justice Act" in 2013 which speeds up the pace of the death penalty process.
