First Lady's "Let's Move" program implemented in US schools
Michelle Obama is taking her "Let's Move" campaign to schools across the country.
Today, the First Lady announced plans for a new set of rules that would prohibit ads for unhealthy foods in schools.
In the future ads like these for junk foods and sugary drinks may no longer be allowed at American schools.
"I think we can all agree that our classrooms should be healthy places where kids are not bombarded with ads for junk food."
The USDA says that more than 90 percent of in school marketing is related to soft drinks and that industry spends 149 million on it!
The First Lady announced these proposed new rules as part of a push for the fourth anniversary of her Let's Move initiative, aimed at ending childhood obesity.
Yesterday she released this video with comedian Will Farrell.
The First Lady also announced the federal school breakfast program will expand to serve nearly 9 million kids in 22,000 schools.
This follows new regulations from the USDA that foods served at schools must be more healthy with calorie, fat and sugar limits.
Those standards will apply to foods and drinks served during meals and even concessions at after school events!
"Parents have a right to expect that during the school day their kids will have food that meets basic nutritional standards."
The first lady's critics say this is another example of the government overstepping its bounds.
But some of the top leaders in the soft drink industry - Coca Cola and Pepsi- are behind her and say this step makes sense.
"I didn't create this issue this new approach to eating and activity is not just a fad and it's not just a movement."
"These new rules about the junk food ads don't go into effect overnight.
Schools won't have to start tearing down scoreboards or vending machines.
They can phase in the changes.
