HEALTH NEWS: Possible TB outbreak in Tennessee
SHELBY COUNTY, TN -- Health officials in Tennessee are on high alert after a possible Tuberculosis outbreak at a high school.
School officials at Frayser High School in Shelby County say at least one person has tested positive for the bacterial infection
Other students and staff who were in contact with the person are also being tested.
TB is is spread through the air, and usually attacks the lungs.
Some parents yanked their kids out of the school to avoid contact with the disease.
Health officials say that, although high numbers of TB are rare, they are taking the threat very seriously.
"It is a serious disease. It can affect any part of the body. When it affects the lungs or the larynx, generally that is when somebody is contagious."
The Health Department is providing free TB tests at the school this week. Click here for more health related stories
