Getting physically fit after childbirth

There's a lot of pressure out there to be fit and thin and these days even pregnant or postpartum women don't get a pass.

Christine Vantimmeren discussed the Fit Mom trend with women and doctors and found out how far is too far and how to get fit. the right way.

Doctors say they're not sure what's causing pregnant and postpartum women to be so concerned with their weight.

But they say the idea that women should have their figure back within the first few weeks is not only ridiculous but dangerous.

Three days a week the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church in Norman transforms.

I know this sounds really clich, but I look forward to coming because it's a great way for Izzy and I to start off our day

(Sarah) Grab a spot on the bench for mountain climbers
Personal trainer Sarah Smith uses the facility for her Baby Bootcamp classes specifically designed for the new or expectant mom.

(Sarah) This is something for them to be accountable to. they have friends that are accountable to it

(Molly) Now that I'm pregnant again it's about being able to bounce back easier after I have this one

Many of the women, like Molly, want that pre-baby body back and aren't afraid to work for it.

(Kari) It's taken me two years to get my jeans on that I wore previous to kids and two years, that's a long commitment

But social media is telling many that two years is too much.
Fitness blogger Caroline Berg Eriksen posted a picture of her toned stomach just four-days after giving birth.

Maria Kang became famous for her "no excuses" picture saying being a mom was no excuse for not being in shape.

(Molly) Get real, that's not going to happen for everyone and it's not an excuse, it's just reality :39

(Dr. Driver) The outliers, those women who do lose weight quickly and easily, are the ones that are applauded and that's an unfair expectation for most women

Dr. Whitney driver -- an OB/GYN at Lakeside Women's Hospital -- applauds women who want to be fit during and after their pregnancy.   But says there are serious risks for those who try too hard.

(Dr. Driver) Your body needs to recover even from an uncomplicated natural delivery  There are muscles and ligaments that need to recover and get back to where they were

Dr. Driver says the average woman will gain 25-to-35 pounds during pregnancy.
15 of that should come off easily within the first six-weeks.

However, six-pack abs within the first month is not a reality.
(Dr. Driver) Especially if you're breast feeding, you body needs extra calories. It needs those extra fat cells and it going to take 9 months to a year before you see your body return to its original shape

(Sarah) I try to tell people it took 9 months for your body to grow this baby and it will easily be 9 months before you get your body back to where it was

Smith says that's why her classes are so important.
Moms are able to trade workout tips and encourage each other no matter what stage they're in.

Being a personal trainer and mom herself.   Smith can facilitate healthy, appropriate exercise.

(Sarah)They're gaining some strength but we're doing it in a real slow, controlled way
(Sarah) Yeah, take it down a notch. you might need to switch to that low impact

(Dr. Driver) It does help to be in an environment of people that look like you, that are gaining weight, that their bodies are going through similar changes  promoting fitness in the right way.

And more importantly teaching their kids to do the same.
(Kari)Aand to feel good about ourselves, to feel good about the direction that I'm heading and the example that I set for her  Go mommy go, go mommy go

(Dr. Driver) I think it's great. I don't think pregnancy is a time in our life when we need to be lazy or stop being active. In fact I think being a mother is the greatest inspiration to be healthy. You want to live as long as you can and be there for your children

Sarah says women are allowed to come back to class six-weeks after a natural birth and eight-weeks after a cesarian.

She and others say while some social media does promote unrealistic expectations.   They are inspired by moms who find ways to be fit and healthy.
