HEALTHWATCH: 50 year study links smoking to other diseases

We all know that smoking is bad for your health..
But a new 50 year report by the Surgeon General has now linked smoking to other diseases.

The report says 5.6 million Americans younger than 18 who are alive today are projected to die prematurely from smoking related diseases if current rates continue.

"Just one of these cigarettes contains around 4,000 ingredients inside and that's enough of a reason for doctors to tell you to quit."

Arsenic---found in rat poison, ammonia-- also in house hold cleaner, and carbon monoxide which is also released in car fumes to name a few chemicals..

The new report points out how cigarettes are more deadly then they were 50-years ago..
And now more diseases are being linked to smoking..

Jennifer Morris  "Before we were saying that we knew it would raise your blood sugar, but now they are saying it could cause diabetes type two."

Scott Wilson was a smoker for nearly 20-years. He smoked a pack every other day.
   
Starting the bad habit was easy.
Scott Wilson  "Where I worked people who got a 10 minute break every hour, so it started that way..we'll I'm going to take a 10 minute break too."

But last year co-workers encouraged him to quit..
He knew quitting was going  to be difficult so he signed up for free cessation classes at Sacred Heart.
   
He says that's when Shelia Kirchharr gave him tips to battle the habit.
Scott Wilson  "I had preconceptions already before I came in that oh it wasn't going to work. I had tried quitting before and had used all the different things."

Shelia Kirchharr  "Some people get shakes, trimmers, sweats, headaches, mouth sores, it's quite a long list."

The 6-week long class helps give smokers a better understanding of what cigarettes have done to their bodies..
The class has a 51-percent success rate.
Once a smoker kicks the habit..
They get some immediate results.
In 20 minutes your heart and respiratory rate return to normal.
Within 8 to 12 hours carbon monoxide is eliminated from the body.

Scott Wilson   "I could smell things, I could taste things, I smelled how bad the cigarette smell really was."

Scott has been smoke free for a year...
"I would dare say without this class in another 20 years I'd be dead, so I would dare say this class probably saved my life."
