WRAP-UP: Casino Gambling Town Hall

Expanded gambling in Florida.
That is expected to be a hot topic during the upcoming legislative session.
Last night WEAR and our partner News Radio 1620 held a town hall meeting to see what people around here think of the idea.
Dozens attended the event and brought up some key issues they feel the community should be concerned about.

No surprise that Casino-style gaming is a popular topic in Florida. At the town hall meeting, people were able to discuss this very topic with community leaders, voicing their concerns, and weighing the pros with the cons.

It's a topic that's long been debated in the state.
And now state lawmakers are about to have serious discussions on expanding gambling.

Four panelists answered questions from the audience, trying to understand exactly what sort of impact the gaming industry might have here.

"We need to make this happen and earmark a certain number of jobs for people on public assistance and with disabilities. How could this not be a winner?"

Gina Maddox
"I need someone to convince me that bringing casinos to the Pensacola area isn't going to harm our quality of life out standard of living here."

Jenise Fernandez
Lawmakers will be discussing this very topic in the spring.
