Mid-Bay Connector open

Today the fastest way to get to Destin is opening.

The bypass, called the Mid-Bay Connector, will open to the public between 4 and 5 this afternoon.
It will route traffic from state road 85 to the Mid-Bay bridge.

As Channel 3's Amber Southard reports, there will also be a new way to pay your tolls.

It's finally finished "The Mid-Bay Connector" and people are calling it the fastest way to Destin but is it worth the money?

Drivers in the Northern end of Okaloosa County will now be able to avoid 14 traffic lights on highway 20 in Niceville.
And the roads in Nicevlle will see less congestion.

But the toll to the connector has many people saying they will boycott the new bypass.
 "I'll find another way."

Drivers already pay $3 to travel the Mid-Bay bridge.
    $2 with a Sun Pass.

The toll booth on the connector will be electronic. Drivers with a Sun Pass will only pay a dollar.
Others will pay a $1.50 by using the new toll by plate program.

A picture of your license plate will be taken and an invoice will be sent to you in the mail at the end of the month.
This new way of tolling will keep the flow of traffic moving.
Drivers could potentially pay $9 round trip.
Dale Henderson said, "That's the first time I had heard about the cost as far as the bypass I would've just assumed it was a free bypass around Niceville, but for that kind of money I don't know if it is worth it to me to miss those lights."

Opening day celebrations will include a 5k run right here on the connector.
