Scenic Highway tree project

ESCAMBIA COUNTY   --  Escambia County is in the process of developing a new comprehensive plan that would change its land development code.

Critics say, the plan could open the door for loosening environmental protections, and lead to a negative impact on quality of life.

Some of those critics are using the recent clearing out of old oak trees at the intersection of Scenic Highway and Interstate 10 as an example of what may happen in the future.

The board of county commissioners discussed those allegations at a meeting this morning.
They say their goal is to keep more control on a local level.

They also pointed out that the Florida Department of Transportation is responsible for the Scenic Highway project.

Grover Robinson/District 4 Commissioner: "The issue is the county really has very little they can control over that. What the county can control is working with dot to ensure that we're going to replant. And not just replant with seedlings, but replant with mature trees that will create the kind of scenic gateway that we used to have there and we will continue to have."

The county is holding a public hearing on the final draft of the comprehensive plan at the commission meeting tonight.
