Florida lawmakers consider new cigarette surcharge

FLORIDA  --  A new surcharge on cigarettes will be considered by Florida lawmakers this year.

South Florida Representative Jim Waldman filed a bill to add a one dollar surcharge on every pack of cigarettes.

He says it would encourage people to quit smoking.
The bill says the surcharge would bring in more than eight hundred-million dollars a year...

The money would be used to offset a proposed reduction in car registration fees.
