Train Derailment Health Alert
PENSACOLA, FL The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County has issued a Health Alert following a train derailment Tuesday night in a rural area just outside of Molino.
Escambia health officials have been advised that one or more derailed train cars may be leaking potentially hazardous contents into the Creek at the derailment site.
They advise against contacting, consuming, or otherwise using, water from Fletcher Creek obtained from the immediate vicinity of the train derailment site.
We will continue to advise the public of possible health concerns as more details become available.
STATEMENT FROM CSX:
A CSX train derailed last night
near Cantonment, Florida.
The train had 3 locomotives and
69 rail cars carrying mixed freight. It was traveling from Waycross,
Georgia to Mobile, Alabama.
A total of 23 cars were derailed. Four cars of phosphoric acid are among those derailed. Two are in Fletcher Creek. There is evidence of a slow leak from a valve at the bottom of one car.
CSX is working with environmental experts to monitor the water quality in Fletcher Creek, which is a mainly stagnant body of water. Results indicate that only the water in the immediate area has been affected. We are performing remediation efforts to neutralize the acidity of the surrounding water. We are working closely with state and federal environmental agencies who have approved this remediation plan.
No injuries have been reported.
Our focus right now is a safe recovery.
