Safety and consumer advocates against raising speed limit in Florida
Safety and consumer advocates are speaking out against changing the speed limit in Florida.
A bill has been filed to allow the speed limit to go up by five miles an hour on rural intestates and divided highways.
But, both the National Safety Council and the Consumer Federation of the Southeast are against that idea.
They say the increase will make the roads less safe, resulting in more accidents and deaths.
"Florida is having about 2,000 deaths a year in traffic crashes. A five percent increase from a five mile an hour speed limit would not surprise me.
Florida's highways have had a 70 mile per hour maximum since 1996.
