HEALTH NEWS: Eating Healthy Costs

Many people want to eat healthy, but think it's just too expensive.
But, some researchers at Harvard say that's not necessarily true.

Most of us know the difference between fresh salmon and frozen fishsticks one is probably better for you.

But there's another difference. The one at the cash register.
Conventional wisdom suggests healthy foods are harder on the wallet. True?

Harvard researchers say, not necessarily. They looked at 27 studies to look at the real cost of healthy eating.  They found the difference between nutritious and the not-so-good... boiled down to an average of just one dollar and fifty cents per day.

A difference in price is most noticeable in meat.  Healthier options for proteins tend to cost more than less healthy options. But the difference is smaller than most of us think.

And for some food categories, like dairy, healthier options are barely more expensive than unhealthy ones.

When a healthy diet helps you avoid obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes - it's a small price to pay.
