Update on management of Escambia County Jail

ESCAMBIA COUNTY   --  Here's an update on the management of the Escambia County Jail.

The Department of Justice has drafted a settlement agreement to resolve its investigation.

Last May, a Justice Department report called the jail appalling, violent and unsafe.   And Sheriff David Morgan asked for a 19-million- dollar budget increase to improve conditions.
On October 1st the county took control of the jail.
Now, commissioners are learning what needs to be done to meet federal standards.

It's a 28-page report.
Here are some highlights:
Implement new security procedures, including documented rounds and random searches...
Track and report prisoner violence.
Fill existing vacancies and add 100 new staff members,
Provide mental health screenings and treatment plans for inmates.

County staff are reviewing the proposal and commissioners will discuss it at their January 2nd meeting.
