HEALTH WATCH: How Joint Replacement surgery changed one man's life

ESCAMBIA COUNTY   --  It is a triumph of technology and science.
Doctors are calling joint replacements the best operation for improving quality of life.

The difference it's made in one man's life.
Just a few years ago Mike Mead could barely walk.

I was hobbling around, I couldn't walk, couldn't go for a walk, couldn't exercise the way id like to exercise, leading to other pains, not as healthy as I'd like to been

All the cartilage in his hip had been worn down...
There is narrowing in the joint space...
He was sick of hearing his wife tell him to do something about it.  So he went in to see Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Jean Dabezies.

You can see the spurs here.
I asked him on a scale of one to 10 what is it, and he said its probably an 11, when he said that it opened my eyes.

Mead got over his fear of surgery and hasn't looked back since.
It's like somebody waved a magic wand over my hip, pain was gone, recovery was easy, its changed my life..

Dr Dabezies says most of his patients are just like Mead.  They've gotten used to their pain not realizing how much it limits their activity.

He had gotten accustomed to his life style.  He's very much on this point, not sure if he wanted surgery.  Once he made the decision, he saw how much he limited himself.

Mead's other hip is now starting to deteriorate as well.
I'm going to still wait another year.

The lesson he learned?
I'm not going to let it go nearly as far as the first one, literally just gimping around, soon as I get further along in pain process, I'll change this one out as well..
