Unemployment compensation delays due to new computer systems update
ESCAMBIA COUNTY -- People on unemployment or filing for unemployment will be without their benefits now through October 15.
The state is updating its online Unemployment Compensation System.
About 2,000 residents in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties receive unemployment benefits.
"For the past month, these flyers have been going around reminding people filing for unemployment, the system will shut down and they should be prepared"
"I applied for unemployment Monday night, I found out the system was going to be down, came by today and of course it is down" said Simone Elliot, unemployed.
Simone Elliott says she was recently laid off from her job at Navy Federal Credit Union.
With bills on the horizon, now she's seeking unemployment assistance.
"This will affect any kind of payment I thought I was going to get started on because now it's a week behind on anything I apply for" said Elliot.
Simone will have to wait a little longer to get her unemployment benefits.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is updating its 30-year old Unemployment Compensation System.
The update will cost nearly 63-million dollars.
It'll take about a week to transfer thousands of unemployment claims to the new 'connect' system where online filing is done.
When the switch is complete on October 15, people's personal information should be better protected with tougher security measures.
The switch is also expected to shorten the time it takes to file a claim.
People who spent the last month preparing say a week without unemployment assistance is bearable.
"I've been out of work for three months so a week won't make a difference, I think I can survive a week or longer" said Bedesta Johnson, unemployed.
For Simone, during these tough times she's relying on her faith, her family and the virtue of patience.
"(laughs) Patience, I'm going to try to make sure I pray for patience so I can deal with this situation" said Elliot.
Once the new website is up and running, Workforce Escarosa will use a room to offer tutorials on filing claims for the people affected.
