Locals speak out about busy intersection
MOLINO -- A busy intersection in Molino that has a history of traffic accidents is being looked at by Escambia County to install a traffic lightthe intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 29.
Some residents call this intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 29 one of the most dangerous in Escambia County and say it needs more than a caution light.
Tom Righter, Molino resident said, "I would say this is the most dangerous intersection in Pensacola.
Tom Righter's boiled peanut stand has been at the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 29 for the last 10 years.
Righter said he's seen many accidents, and feels something needs to be done to make the busy Molino intersection safer.
"I've counted almost 84 people run this stop sign here, and 53 of them run that one over there, even these 18 wheelers, said Righter.
Numerous traffic crashes have occurred at the intersection over the years. It sees a lot of traffic from commercial trucks, and cars traveling at high rates of speed.
Bob Seep, Molino resident said, "It's like a suicide run, every time you go through it, whether you're on the highway or coming on or off, it's rough.
The Florida Department of Transportation have studied the area once in 2008 and again in 2010.
More signage was installed and even an extra turning lane, but FDOT determined the flashing caution light was enough.
Nearby residents disagree.
Katrina Sanford Molino resident said, "I think personally, and a lot of other people up here feel there need to be a red light at this intersection.
Escambia county officials say, they're willing to pay to have a traffic light installed, if they get approval from FDOT.
For people who use the intersection every day, they feel the county should do whatever it takes to make things safer.
Righter said, "You need a traffic light, that's the only way we're going to save these people out here because when the traffic light turns red, they'll stop.
County commissioners plan to meet with the department of transportation to discuss putting a traffic light at this intersection.
