New lethal injection drug to be used in Florida execution tonight
FLORIDA -- A new lethal injection drug will be used for an execution tonight at the Florida State Prison.
William Happ is scheduled to be put to death for murdering a 21-year-old Illinois woman.
Happ will be the first death row inmate to have a new lethal injection cocktail used during his execution.
The new drug is designed to induce unconsciousness, paralysis and eventually death by cardiac arrest.
The Department of Corrections says they did research on the drug to make it is as humane as possible.
But some are not so sure.
"It is our job to do that in the most dignified and humane way possible."
"The Death Penalty Information Center has said this is really an experiment on a human being."
Legislation is expected to be introduced to lawmakers for the 2014 session - which would repeal capital punishment in Florida.
