Federal Food Stamp program decreasing by 5 billion dollars Friday
The federal food stamp program will see an estimated five billion in cuts beginning Friday.
In 2009 congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
It increased benefits to families in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
That boost was meant to help people through the economic downturn that began in late 2008.
Lawmakers made sure the increase would only be temporary.
The funding runs out November 1st.
Families were notified by mail in October of the decreased benefits.
