Argo Football coming to Downtown Pensacola
PENSACOLA -- University of West Florida football is coming to downtown Pensacola.
The 2016 inaugural season will be played at Maritime Park.
University of West Florida football has been a thought for a long time. Wednesday UWF leaders and members of the community Maritime Park Association announced Maritime Park will serve as a temporary home for the Argo's football team.
"I think that's awesome because we're finally getting to do more stuff with our new downtown area," said Craig McConaghy.
The contract could have the Argos playing at least two seasons at the park as a NCAA Division two team.
Nick's Boathouse is located next to the park. They say during baseball season their sales are up, but in the of season they experience a 15% decrease.
They hope having football in the fall will help.
"I absolutely see my sales going up you know tailgating people hanging out I'm not sure how they are going to do it, but we've got the property for it and I think it will be a blast," said Charles Slayton.
Members of the CMPA say the stadium can hold up to 5,100 fans but hope to be able to accommodate nearly 9,000.
"We're not sure the exact capacity or whether well build or how many stands we're going to build on the field and people fitting in on the birm and that, but as many people that buy tickets well try to fit them in," said Collier Merrill.
Something owner of Jerry's Cajun Cafe says will help his business.
Jerry Mistretta "The foot traffic is so important to us because people being downtown and there is so many more activities and the businesses opening downtown."
But the contract isn't exactly final
Right now the deal states ...UWF will pay the CMPA 5,000 dollars per game
And the university will give 1-dollar per ticket sold to the CMPA
Other things that may be an issue is parking.
But local businesses owners say that's something their not to concerned with.
Charles Slayton "It's a concern, but not a major concern I'd rather have the people then not have the people."
UWF plans to build their on stadium on their campus.
And plans to hire a head football coach in spring 2014, who will start recruiting the first football student-athletes that fall.
