Police urge community to speak out against violence

Happening today - the Escambia County Sheriff's Office is inviting the community to join them in an effort to increase the reporting of crimes.

In wake of several shootings throughout this community this month, the sheriff's office has decided to hold a community outreach event here at the sheriff's office at 1 pm today.

The sheriff's office says the greatest weapon they have in fighting crime is a community that will no longer accept it. Sheriff Morgan wants any concerned member of the community to come to this afternoons event where a series of new public service announcements will be shown. The short videos feature Pastor Rodney Jones. He and his wife Latasha, are the founders and pastors of New World Believer's Ministries. The couple hope their involvement will encourage others to step up and help stop violence. But some people in the community aren't sold that this event will spark change.

"It's kind of hard having it at the sheriff's place. I wouldn't want to go and a lot of people don't like the law but I can see they are trying to make a plan," said resident Dominic Smith.

The event again will be held today at 1 p.m. at the sheriff's office.
