Eglin petitions to train in state park

Limited training in Blackwater Forest State Park is now a possibility so Eglin Air Force Base in Okaloosa is trying to address concerns surrounding it.

The base wants to use small parcels, already cleared off by the forest service, for training exercises. They would only do it when missile tests prevent training on the Eglin range.

Some locals are worried about the noise, restricted access, and about preserving the beauty of the park. An Eglin spokesman says the forest service will decide when and where training is allowed.

"Well, they've pretty well got the right to do it, and they should have. But then still, I think they ought to be held to their word, you know. And I say try it and see," said Dennise Hatcher.

Eglin says only non-hazardous training would be allowed in the bullets and no bombs. There will be public hearings after an environmental impact statement is released in November.
