Researcher hope to start identifying bodies from Dozier School for Boys
After years of fighting, the exhumation project out at the former Dozier School for Boys is now under way. Over the weekend these researchers from the University of South Florida began digging, looking for buried secrets. Earlier this year using high-tech equipment the researchers said they found evidence of at least 50 bodies buried. It will take several months to unearth them all. But once they do, the team is hoping to identify them and give closure to their families.
"We approach this with the goal to identify everyone, that's our objective. We know that realistically, that won't happen."
A Florida state investigation in 2009 determined there was no evidence of criminal activity connected with any of the deaths or abusive treatment at the facility. Many former students have called that investigation a "cover-up" of the school's brutal past.
