Okaloosa County bus route and fare changes
OKALOOSA COUNTY -- There could soon be changes to bus routes and fares in Okaloosa County.
Tonight county commissioners are discussing possibly shutting three bus routes.
They're also thinking about raising the fares.
This bus stop right outside of City Hall in Crestview could be one of many stops on the chopping block.
Okaloosa County's growth management director says they're considering shutting down bus routes 11 and 12, in Crestview, and Route 33, in Destin.
It's all about numbers when it comes to this decision.
A major budget shortfall coupled with the fewest amount of riders at those three bus routes are the factors behind this proposed cut.
County officials say they are also thinking about raising the fares from 25 to 50 cents. A public hearing will be held to tonight at 6:30 at the county courthouse, in Crestview. We spoke to several residents. Here's what two had to say about eliminating certain routes.
Thomas Holt- Resident
"Are we for full employment? To expand the economy and let only those who have a lot of money be able to travel to work."
Brandy Reed- Resident
"I understand they need to make budget cuts but a lot of elderly people use that system to get groceries."
Riders will get sixty days notice before any changes are made.
