Flights delayed in Okaloosa County by DC shooting

At Northwest Florida Regional Airport, the daily arrival from DC was also delayed.
For passengers who call the nation's capital home, landing late was the least of their worries.

Channel 3's Laura Hussey continues our team coverage now from Okaloosa County.

US Air 4653 arrived at Northwest Florida Regional Airport just before 6pm...about two hours later than expected.
A couple of dozen passengers came down from the gate in small groups.
Most said the delay and heightened security at Reagan National weren't a big concern.

Ellen Safran/ Washington, DC "No not really. The airport's pretty used to orange alerts, red alerts, all kind of alerts. Sometimes there are dogs there, you never know what to expect."
Ellen Safran and her husband did expect a delay for their flight.
She heard sirens at 9 am; they live near the navy yard where the shootings took place.

Ellen "We weren't sure why the airport was closed, except that there were so many helicopters in the area."

Saul Safran/Washington, DC "But when we heard there were one or two shooters they hadn't found yet, I realized that they just wanted to shut down avenues for them to get out of the area."
Kim Hellen lived in DC most of her life, before moving to Northwest Florida.
Her husband worked at the naval research lab.

Kim "Just really overwhelmed by it. I just can't believe that something like that could have happened becaue their security is usually spot on."
They came to the airport to see their daughter off on a flight back to DC.

Kim "We' just had to sit on the airport and wait a little longer today than normal. Just a little uneasy about seeing her back into that area but.....we're just praying for the people back home"

No flights out of Northwest Florida Regional Airport were canceled because of the shootings. In Okaloosa County, Laura Hussey, Channel 3 News.
